When I graduated in 2003, I was ready to take on the world…the interior design world that is! However the reality is that once you get out in the real world there’s no guarantee that you’ll succeed in the industry. Eleven years later I have worked my way from the bottom to now the owner of a Design Studio. In those years I have learned tricks of the trade that you don’t learn in college and found the tried and true tips that still ring true today.
Clever Interior Design Tricks – Tip 1:
When shopping for finishes such as wallpaper, flooring, tile please, PLEASE do not place them on the table and under an overhead light and determine that they just don’t work. Why? Because the reality is you will never experience any of these finishes lying flat on a surface right next to each other. Your eyes will see them in different planes, the wallpaper will be on a vertical plane, while the flooring will be on a horizontal plane below. They take on a whole different personality and tone when you view them the way they will be lived with. Place the wallpaper sample against your wall and place your flooring sample up against in on the floor. You’ll find that what you thought was overwhelming while staring on a flat surface is quite appealing.
Clever Interior Design Tricks – Tip 2
When hanging drapery panels always attach them above and away from the window. Always install the rod as high as you can on your wall, this will help in giving height to your space. And when attaching the brackets make sure they are installed about 4” away from the window casing, that way when you hang your curtain panel it will hang and cover the wall not the window! This will give the illusion of having a larger window! Let that natural light in, it’s gorgeous! Oh and before I forget pay attention to the finial size you don’t want install the brackets and pole and find that the finials don’t fit! I’ve learned the hard way!
Clever Interior Design Tricks – Tip 3
Did you know every room has 5 walls? Yes it does! Look up and you will see a great opportunity to add personality to your space. Leaving the ceiling white is boring and tired. Don’t be afraid to paint it! It’s basically screaming for attention….go subtle if you are nervous about taking this step, however I like to think, “Go big or go home!”
Clever Interior Design Tricks – Tip 4 & 5
Let’s talk area rugs shall we? If your area rug looks like it’s just there to frame your coffee table, it’s too small!! Area rugs should anchor the space, they should always go under the first set of legs of your sofa and chairs. Which leads me into my next tip and a huge peeve of mine, furniture placement. Instead of placing your furniture along the perimeter of your walls and leaving your small area rug in the middle, think about how you would hold a conversation. U shaped seating configurations are tried and true, they work! There’s also what I learned early on in my career as the H shape – that’s when you place the sofa and chairs facing each other with the coffee table in the center. (Visually if you were looking from above it would take on an H shape!
Clever Interior Design Tricks – Tip 6
Nothing looks more out place then a small piece of art on a large wall. If you have a large wall hang a large painting or optimize it into a gallery wall. Always hang at eye level, think of how artwork is viewed in a gallery, it’s hung at the average eye level of those admiring it.
There you have it, a sampling of the tips and tricks of the trade! Be fearless, remember its only paint, you can exchange the rug! Stop staring at blank walls! Better yet contact us at Interiors by Revive!
